Two mounted police in winter gear that I spotted last winter.
Once Russia was very much into horses.
The largest horse population anywhere in the world. Huge macadam-free distances only navigable by horse.
Entire social groups depended on the horse for everything both in war and peacetime such as the Cossacks also some nomadic groups as part of the Russian nation.
Large horse armies existed well into the 1950s. Crack horseback troops were very successfully utilized in WW2 by the Red Army.
Cavalry has the advantage over foot infantry of being able to infiltrate though swampy grounds and over motorized infantry and tanks, the advantage of being able to infiltrate through woods and hills and mountainous areas as well.
A single horse regiment may have survived to this day.
There are some mounted police left as well although not anywhere in as many numbers as in the 1950s through the 1970s really.
