Moskvitch 2137

Here is the Moskvitch 2137 that I spotted earlier this year in one of the back yards.

The Moskvitch (also "Moskvich" without the "t") 2137 is a station wagon / estate version of the Moskvitch 2140, the last true Moskvitch meaning a compact RWD classic sedan.

It is the last car in the Soviet Union / Russia to have finned vertical taillights which were retained from the previous model to facilitate rear cargo door operation.

The Moskvitch 2137 was discontinued in 1985 so this car is at least 30+ years old.

 Some old advertising photos.

As I said the M-2137 is a version of the M-2140 and identical to the sedan but the rear part and the cargo area are actually from the previous cargo version - the Moskvitch 427.

Below, at a London car show in early 1970s.

Two types of the rear cargo door.

  1. These look so neat! And it was modern at the time to offer a hatchback.

    1. Yes, Ramon, look nice, fins, vertical taillights, but I think in style it's closer to the station wagon / estate car (Универсал in Russian) than to a proper hatchback.
